Catalogues

Our catalogues are our show-cases and our shopping windows. We issue 4 to 5 lavishly illustrated catalogues per year that bring our stock and our recent acquisitions to your doorstep. We also issue lists on special subjects, such as cycling or mountaineering, and lists with special offers. All of them are available as print versions, but also as PDF’s via email. Please click either “print version” or “pdf” if you wish to receive them.

88 Selected Items

A list of 88 rare and beautiful books. It contains not only travel books: You will find the "Flora londinensis" by the famous botanist Curtis, the "Architectura  militaris nova et aucta" by Freitag, or a Casanova limited edition with risqué illustrations, printed in Vienna in 1923. Of course, there are many unusual and desireable travel books as well: My personal favorite is the little volume "Peeps at the Esquimaux", London 1825, with 20 handcoloured plates and as many vignettes.

New Aquisitions – Freemasonry

This list of exactly 100 titles contains firstly: recently acquired books on travel and geography, our specialities. I was lucky enough to buy a small collection of early literature on China, which you will find here. Secondly: 24 highly interesting pamphlets and booklets on Freemasonry, Rosicrucians and Illuminati from the late 18th century. They are all in German and very rare due to their fragile nature. Lastly: A list of all available books and reprints from the Brockhaus / Antiquarium Publishing Company. During the second half of the 20th century, we published or reprinted many historically important works of travel, often with a new preface and introduction. Several of these are still in print and are listed here.

Catalogue 204

All around the world

The Winter Catalogue contains books about the whole world and its discovery and exploration. One of the highlights is Gmelin's 4-volume "Reise durch Sibirien", in which he attempts to define the border between Europe and Asia. Probably the first printed map of the Black Sea can be found in Flavius Arran's "Ponti Euxini & maris Erythraei Periplus". Niebuhr, Franklin, Rohlfs or Oppenheim - all the important names are present in this illustrated catalogue. You will even find Columbus' handwritten logbook, waterstained and shell- and seaweed incrusted!

Browse the catalogue here or let me know if you prefer a printed copy.

Catalogue 203

Ornithology, Travel Books, Travel Guides

Humming Birds, sea birds, extinct birds, gorillas, poisonous snakes or mosquitoes – the first part of my latest catalogue is dedicated to books on exotic animals. Some of the highlight are Rothschilds “Extinct Birds”, René Lessons “Histoire naturelle des oiseuaux-mouches …”, Heuglin’s “Ornithologie Nordost-Afrikas”, Heckel’s stunning “Kunstformen der Natur”, Radde’s  “Ornis Caucasica” or Swainson’s “Fauna Boreali-Americana”. The catalogue also contains the classic travel description like della Valle’s “Reißbeschreibung” from 1574, Freshfield’s “Exploration of the Caucasus” or Georg Forster’s “Gesammelte Schriften”. And the “Travel Guide” chapter shows that there is more to this interesting field than Baedekers and Grieben.
